Housebreaking or potty training your puppy dog is one of the most important things to teach him. Even people who are indifferent to dog training, and don’t care if their dog can sit, stand or come on command want a pet that is housebroken.

Ideally, you should start toilet training your dog when he is a puppy. However, this is not always possible. Sometimes you will get a dog from the pound, or from another place where he has received no training at all, even housebreaking. In this case you have to start the toilet training, no matter the age of the dog. We will assume, however, for the purposes of this article, that you are potty training a new puppy.

You have to remember that a young puppy has poor control over his bodily functions and cannot be expected to go very long without pottying. So a new puppy is going to have accidents no matter what method you use. There are a couple of ways to deal with this. One is to keep him in a confined area with newspapers on the floor. Gradually, as he learns to hold it in until you go outside, you remove the newspapers. Another methods is to use crate training. The crate serves as the dog’s den, and he will try his best to keep this area clean.

No matter which method you use, you want to take the puppy outside frequently, so he can learn to potty in the right place. Of course, when he does, you should praise him and let him know this is what you want. As dogs love to please, this learning will come naturally. It is best not to use punishment or yelling when housebreaking a puppy. For one thing, unless you catch them in the act, they will not even know what you are angry about. It is sufficient to show pleasure when they do what you want them to do.

You should walk the puppy early in the morning, after every meal, and last thing at night. As the puppy gets older, he will gain more control over his body and be able to hold it in longer. He will also learn that you prefer him to do his pottying outdoors.
You should learn to look for signs that he has to go out. Any dog will have a routine, such as circling in a particular way, before he does his business. As you start to recognize this behavior, you can immediately take him out. This will make the learning process go faster.

Puppy potty training is not usually a difficult task. It only takes some time and patience on your part.
