Attack Dog Training

Attack Dog Training – Is This Something You Can Do Yourself ?

Are you thinking about purchasing an attack dog, or training your dog to become an attack dog? This is a very specialized type of dog training that is not suitable for all dogs –or owners. Pursuing attack dog training is something you should carefully consider before proceeding. It is also something that should only be done by a qualified professional. Trying to train your dog to become an attack dog without the right experience or knowledge of animal behavior can be dangerous –for you, your dog and others.

Do You Need an Attack Dog?

Some people like the idea of having an attack dog, as it makes them feel powerful or macho. People sometimes get attack dogs, or train their dogs in this way for the same reason some people buy guns or other weapons. In the wrong hands, both guns and dogs can be dangerous, and not necessarily in the way the owner intends.

Only certain breeds of dogs, and certain individual dogs make suitable attack dogs. In general, German Shepards and Rotweillers are usually recommended. Aside from the breed, the individual dog should have a good pedigree. An attack dog needs to be both aggressive and obedient, which is not a typical combination of traits for the average dog.

Attack dogs are used for military, police, and security purposes, of course. People also train their dogs to attack for the purpose of entering them into illegal dogfights. Some people, however, do have a legitimate need for an attack dog for personal protection. People who live in dangerous neighborhoods, who are elderly or handicapped, who have large amounts of money or valuables on their person or in their homes all might want an attack dog for protection.

Buy or Train an Attack Dog?

You can buy a fully trained attack dog or have your dog trained in this way. If you are willing to learn the procedure and are sure your dog is suitable for this, you can also do attack dog training yourself. Which option you choose depends on how much time you want to put into the effort, as well as your needs and budget.

One thing to remember is that an attack dog is not really a pet, but a working dog. Once a dog has undergone attack dog training, he does not have a complete trust in strangers. He is likely to only have a close rapport with his owner. Attack dog training is not a decision to take lightly. If you decide to do it, be sure to get the best possible guidance.
